Rio+20

IPIECA, together with the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP), are preparing the oil and gas industry input into the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (also known as Rio+20) being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 20-22 June 2012.

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20)

The objective of the Rio+20 Conference is to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges.

The Conference will focus on two themes:

  • a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and
  • the institutional framework for sustainable development.

Business Action for Sustainable Development 2012 (BASD)

IPIECA is an official partner of Business Action for Sustainable Development 2012 (BASD). A temporary coalition of business organizations, BASD 2012 will ensure that the voice of business is heard in Rio and during the preparatory process. This joint initiative, under the leadership of S. Gopalakrishnan - CEO of Infosys, a global consulting and technology services company based in India - is being convened by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the United Nations Global Compact.

The ultimate objective of BASD 2012 is to strengthen Rio+20 overall contributions to sustainable and inclusive markets and promote collaborative action between all stakeholders –business, government, civil society and consumers – towards greening economies. BASD 2012 is the official United Nations recognized business and industry channel for Rio+20.
