IPIECA at the World Petroleum Congress

IPIECA had a strong presence at the 20th World Petroleum Congress, held from 4-8 December in Doha, Qatar. Alongside a booth in the exhibition hall there were three sessions on sustainability reporting with speakers Aron Cramer, BSR, Paul Krishna, ExxonMobil, Brett Doherty, RasGas, Kelly Kowalchuk, Nexen and Beatriz Espinosa, Petrobras. The sessions outlined the importance for oil and gas companies to tell their own stories and provide transparency in their operations for reasons including regulatory requirements, reputational reasons and employee retention. Key trends in reporting were discussed including integrated reporting, web based and specific issues reporting, providing forward-looking information, stakeholder input and regulatory requirements.
Rob Cox, IPIECA's Technical Director took part in a special session on the safety of exploration and production in deep water alongside Michael Engell-Jensen, OGP and Richard Morrison, BP. The session was moderated by Jack Gerard, President of API
Mudumbai Venkatesh, AECOM presented on improving water management in refining operations: minimizing consumption and maximising re-use in a session looking at managing water in upstream and downstream operations.
Estella Nucci, former IPIECA Social Responsibility Project Manager (now Operations, Fuels and Product Issues) was Vice-Chair for a session on a Societal Licence to Operate: HSE and Community Development alongside Amanda Pereira, ARPEL. The speakers included Brett Doherty, RasGas and Dr. Vincent Saubreste, seconded from Total to the Oil Sands Leadership Initiative.
Elena Oskolskaya, ExxonMobil presented on the IPIECA guidance on developing a Local Content Strategy in a session on social responsibility requirements for financing and energy projects.
Laurent Fragu, RasGas presented a poster on the revision of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Guidelines, Rob Cox on creating successful, sustainable social investment and Karl Fennessey, ConocoPhillips on the Global Water Tool.
