IPIECA and the Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI) signed an MoU in November 2011. The mutually collaborative partnership between the two parties is primarily focused on the development of the GEMI Local Water Tool (LWT) for oil and gas site-level water risk assessment.

There are three main themes to the MoU:

1. Cooperation between the two parties in collaboratively defining and implementing sustainable concepts and practices in the arena of water management
2. Ensuring compatibility between the GEMI Local Water Tool (LWT) for oil and gas and IPIECA’s Global Water Tool for oil and gas
3. Promotion of the two mutually compatible tools as providers of best practices for sustainable water management at the global, regional, national and local levels.
