IPIECA, API and OGP present a major update to the Oil and gas industry guidance on voluntary sustainability reporting.

The 2010 Guidance draws on unparalleled industry expertise and knowledge with contributions from hundreds of professionals from across 20 oil and gas companies and 6 industry associations, as well as candid insights and advice from an independent Stakeholder Panel of leading experts. The 2010 update represents industry consensus on the most prevalent sustainability issues and indicators resulting in the most practical, authoritative and comprehensive guidance available on sustainability reporting for oil and gas companies. 

The Guidance is a reference tool aimed at helping company sustainability managers, communications professionals, and environmental, health and safety, or social and economic specialists develop corporate-level reports for internal and external stakeholder audiences. The update recognizes that certain sustainability issues will be more important to some companies than to others, as different types of multinational and national companies face specific social and environmental challenges in their locations across the globe. Therefore, more emphasis has been placed on reporting as an engagement process allowing companies to determine which issues are most important to their own stakeholders.

The Guidance can be used to report performance to different audiences in different ways and for activities across a corporation or in a single country, for large projects or for a single operation. Ultimately the 2010 update has been designed to be the primary document to assist both new and existing reporters develop and improve their reporting processes.

Oil and gas companies have been among the pioneers of sustainability reporting and will continue to provide leading examples of good reporting practice. This Guidance has been developed to share good practice across the industry and to encourage companies, both current and new reporters, to keep their stakeholders informed about their performance. Reporting with the Guidance framework will help companies engage with stakeholders, drive performance improvement, and strengthen dialogue and understanding on a wide range of sustainability issues.
