Guidance on the application of Globally Harmonized System (GHS) criteria to petroleum substances

    June 2010

This guidance was developed by IPIECA to facilitate appropriate classification and labelling of petroleum substances within the Unknown or Variable Composition, Complex Reaction Products or Biological Materials (UVCB) group. It was developed with input from experienced technical experts in petroleum substance toxicology and addresses crude oil and petroleum substances produced from oil and gas operations. The guidance includes a Technical Support Document where the principles of the guidance are explained using relevant scientific literature.

Managing biodiversity impacts: 10 tips for success in the oil and gas industry

    May 2010

The tips are relevant along every stage of the value chain. They start with ‘Begin yesterday’ and end with ‘Adapt and improve’. Each tip is supported by a resource, many of which are IPIECA/OGP documents. The document itself was launched on Biodiversity Day, 22 May 2010, and is intended as an external communications piece to raise awareness.

Alien invasive species and the oil and gas industry

    April 2010

This document delivers practical information to on-the-ground staff at onshore and offshore projects and operations, helping them to identify key issues and solutions and to embed active consideration of alien invasive species (AIS) from the earliest stages of the project. It also provides a high level overview to environmental and project managers on why and how AIS should be managed. In many cases, review and use of this guidance document by contractors and service providers, such as construction and plant and vessel operators, and shipping companies, will also be appropriate.

Human rights training toolkit - 2nd edition

    October 2009

As the subject of human rights has risen rapidly on the oil and gas industry agenda IPIECA members have developed this Toolkit to raise awareness. The Toolkit is targeted at country managers, asset managers, business managers, and other personnel that would benefit from learning about human rights issues and the way in which human rights issues have potential implications for oil and gas operations. The Toolkit provides managers with a template that can be used and adapted to conform to a company’s policy or position on human rights and applicable domestic laws and regulations.

Drilling fluids and health risk management

    October 2009

This document provides general background on drilling fluids and the various categories of base fluids and additives currently in use. It outlines potential health hazards associated with these substances, looks at potential areas for human exposure presented by drilling operations, and introduces risk management methods and monitoring processes aimed at reducing the risk of harmful health effects.

    Urban encroachment

    October 2009

This guide has been developed to assist members of IPIECA and their stakeholders to better understand and manage the risks associated with the social, political, environmental and economic impact of growing (encroaching) urban populations. As urban centres grow, the pressures increase on pre-existing industrial facilities to reduce their environmental footprint or relocate altogether. The implications of urban encroachment bring with it added costs, increased risks and often unwanted public exposure.

Oil and natural gas industry guidelines for greenhouse gas reduction projects: flare reduction project family

    July 2009

This publication is the third greenhouse gas reduction project family in the Guidelines for greenhouse gas reduction projects series. This project family addresses GHG emission reductions associated with reduced flaring activities from oil and gas operations. Guidelines in this publication focus on specific technical considerations and aspects rather than policy considerations. The document also explores case studies for three potential applications.
