Greenhouse gas emissions reporting: Perspectives on voluntary and regulatory reporting mechanisms, and emerging changes in practice
January 2012"Greenhouse gas emissions reporting: Perspectives on voluntary and regulatory regimes" provides a summary of the themes heard at the 2011 IPIECA workshop. It is aimed at everyone who has an interest in greenhouse gas reporting and the requirements it places on companies. The publication highlights: the reason for growing demands for companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions; developments in voluntary reporting standards and regulatory requirements; industry concerns over the burgeoning reporting frameworks; the uncertainty and lack of comparability being brought about by competing frameworks; and some of the emerging changes in practice

Preparing effective flare management plans: Guidance document for the oil and gas industry
November 2011This publication draws on the experience and expertise of the industry, through IPIECA and OGP, and the World Bank-led Global Gas Flaring Reduction Public-Private partnership (GGFR). It is the product of a cooperative effort between the IPIECA GHG Emissions Task Force and GGFR to create a guidance document to support flare reduction efforts by petroleum producers and governments worldwide. The key to addressing gas flaring is the identification of project activities that can successfully bring the gas to more productive use, and the expansion of potential solutions from those attainable by individual oil field operators to solutions that fully employ the capabilities of operators and governments working together.

Local content strategy: a guidance document for the oil and gas industry
October 2011Many oil and gas producing states are introducing requirements for ‘local content’ into their regulatory frameworks. These requirements aim to create jobs, promote enterprise development and accelerate the transfer of skills and technologies. Local content has therefore become a strategic issue for the oil and gas industry—presenting both challenges and opportunities. This guidance document is based on IPIECA members’ efforts to develop good practice in managing local content. It is aimed at practitioners and other company representatives with responsibility for this objective.

Global Water Tool for oil and gas
September 2011This customized version of the WBCSD Global Water Tool, which has been piloted by 15 global oil and gas companies, has been developed by IPIECA in collaboration with WBCSD and led by CH2M HILL. The tool will allow oil and gas companies to map their water use and assess risks for their overall global portfolio of sites considering each part of the oil and gas value chain. The tool will allow users to consider factors such as what percentage of its production volume is in water-scarce areas, how many refineries are in water-scarce areas and at greatest risks, as well as how many sites are in countries that lack access to improved water sanitation. The PDF package download contains the excel tool and the how-to PowerPoint presentation.

Life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of transportation fuels: issues and implications for unconventional fuel sources
July 2011The effectiveness and efficiency of regulatory and other policy approaches intended to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels can hinge on the fuel life-cycle analysis (LCA). This report provides a summary of the workshop of the same name, convened in September 2010 by the Climate Change Working Group. It focuses on the LCA for transport fuels from unconventional hydrocarbon sources and associated regulatory issues and implications. Also, it examines these in the context of experience gained in the study of conventional hydrocarbon sources, biofuels, electric vehicles, and other alternatives.

Ecosystem services guidance: Biodiversity and ecosystem services guide
May 2011The oil and gas industry both depends and impacts upon biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES). The aim of this guide is threefold. Firstly, it explains the relationship between biodiversity, ecosystem services and the oil and gas industry. Secondly, it provides a set of checklists to help identify the main ecosystem service dependencies and impacts of oil and gas developments. Thirdly, it highlights key associated risks and opportunities for oil and gas companies, and provides guidance on potential measures for managing them. The checklists covering the five stages of the oil and gas life cycle for six generic habitat types, onshore and offshore, can be found in the library, below under 'More/additional information' or on the CD-Rom at the back of this guide.
