Background
The development of the 'Oil and Gas Industry Guidance on Voluntary Sustainability Reporting' is the second phase of a larger IPIECA/API initiative aimed at helping companies improve reporting on environment, health and safety, social, and economic issues. The project has 3 distinct phases:

Phase 2: Guidance
Phase 3: Engagement

In February 2003, IPIECA and API completed the Assessment phase by publishing the Compendium of Sustainability Reporting Practices and Trends for the Oil and Gas Industry. This provided an overview of the level of sustainability or non-financial indicator reporting among many oil and gas companies.
The Compendium concluded that: "The greatest challenges faced by the industry regarding sustainability performance reporting are determining how to measure, define and select appropriate indicators. Member companies would like industry associations to provide support mostly in the area of establishing and maintaining consistent metric definitions and measurement methods, but not in verification of performance results."

As a result, the 'Oil and Gas Industry Guidance on Voluntary Sustainability Reporting' was developed.
Phase 2: Guidance

The guidance document - The Oil and Gas Industry Guidance on Voluntary Sustainability Reporting - subsequently produced seeks to address these challenges. More information on the Guidance is available on the page 'About the Guidance'.

Phase 3: Engagement
This third phase is to engage companies across the oil and gas industry and encourage use of the Guidance.
Four workshops were organised to launch the Guidance in various regions:
